March 20, 1942 - July 29, 2019
Unexpectedly, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, NY.
Robert was born in Schenectady, NY, and attended Schenectady schools graduating from Linton High in 1960. He also had degrees in Forestry and Philosophy.
For a number of years he ran Elwell Motors with his father, Robert E. Elwell, while his mother was a head technician for both Lange & Rapp Pharmacy and Ellis Hospital. Elizabeth A. Elwell was the mother of Robert and his brother, Mark R. Elwell.
Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maria Wood Elwell, and his daughter, Robin (David) Elwell. He was also the father of Robert C. Elwell who passed January 30, 2002. Robert was also the grandfather of Robert B. Elwell and his wife Kayleigh, Matthew I (Meg) Patterson, Shane S. Elwell, Zachary R. Patterson, and Maria L. Patterson (Nick). He is also survived by two great granddaughters Annabelle and Izabelle. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Robert spent the majority of his working life with the Schenectady County Sheriff's Department starting as a Corrections Officer and then becoming Lieutenant, being promoted to Major after a civil service test. Serving in this capacity, he helped establish policy and was always available to help anyone who needed it. He also developed several programs that improved family relationships for the incarcerated as well as educational opportunities.
As many will attest, Robert was the most moral and honest person they have ever known. After retirement, Robert rejoined the Sheriff's Department as the Inmate Services Coordinator continuing to help others as he always had. If someone needed something and Robert had it he would help provide. The world has lost one of the good ones who will be sorely missed.
He was an avid basketball player and with his team was inducted into the Linton Hall of Fame. He also took an interest in his granddaughters' softball helping to coach. He was always available for his grandchildren. He was a helper by nature and well loved.
