LATHAM - Robert G. Hempstead, 83, passed away at his home on August 26, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He died after a long battle with emphysema.
He was the son of George A. Hempstead and Gladys (Lord) Hempstead. He grew up in Westerlo, NY, and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Westerlo Dist. #6. He was a 1947 graduate of Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School.

Bob served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic and was a 35-year member of the Union of Operating Engineers Local 106 of Albany. Bob retired from Contractor Sales Co. after 35 years, where he was a field service mechanic and later a service manager.

He was a member of the Latham Community Baptist Church. His Christian faith was an important part of his life. After retirement, he drove part-time for the Colonie Senior Services transportation out of the Beltrone Living Center.
Bob's joy was his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Joyce(Rector)Hempstead, his son, Mark Hempstead and wife Eileen, and three adorable grandchildren, Madison, Carter and Lincoln Hempstead of Glenville.
He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. Bob was predeceased by his brother, Douglas Hempstead.
