LATHAM, NY – Robert Nelson McMeekin, 98, of Latham, died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Newburgh, he was the son of the late Robert Alexander McMeekin and Blanche (Hannon) McMeekin, and husband of the late Elizabeth M. McMeekin, and to whom he was married 68 years. During World War II Mr. McMeekin served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Lexington. He was employed by the State Education Dept. for 45 years, until his retirement. Aside from his full time employment, Robert was a well-known tenor saxophone player who played with some of jazz's finest musicians, including Bobby Hackett and the Les Brown Band. He was an avid lifelong New York Yankees fan. Robert is the beloved father of Stacia M. Sipperly and her husband, Lynn of Colonie. He is the devoted grandfather of Karen M. Miller, Linda J. Hunt, Christine Sipperly-Bult and Brian T. Sipperly. He is the cherished great-grandfather of Kendra and Jared Hunt and Jeremy and Zachary Bult.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York, 99 Troy Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061 in memory of Robert N. McMeekin.
