WYNANTSKILL - Robert "Pope" Powell, 64, Vietnam Vet, USMC, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospital.
Robert was born on June 7, 1947 in Suffern, NY. He served in the USMC from July 1967 to September 1968 and attainted the rank of Corporal. Pope worked for many years as a professional cook prior to joining the Vet Council. He was instrumental in establishing the Homeless Vet Program in Albany; served and cooked in Cooking with Jazz for the Links that sponsored scholarships for seniors. He was substance abuse counselor at the Bridge Center. A room was dedicated to him at Vanderheyden Hall for his lifelong accomplishments.
Pope, as he was known to by many, loved spending time with his family, listening to Jazz music.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Diane M. (Mason) Powell; his loving children, Kelly, Dan, Lori, Lachesha, and Sara; his cherished grandchildren, LaFon (Toya), AJ, Brucey, Brianna, Ray, Jade, Nijah, and Sierra; his cherished great-grandchildren, Xavion and Jae Lon. He is also survived by step grandchildren, a multitude of nieces and nephews, friends and his Vet brothers. He also leaves behind his canine companion, Thor.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Colonie. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
