COLONIE – Rodmond P. Nitschke, 81, of Colonie, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. He was born in Rotterdam and was the son of the late Edward and Catherine Pritchard Nitschke. Mr. Nitschke was a resident of Rotterdam and Colonie for all of his life. Rod was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a Fireman First Class aboard the U.S.S. Ross. After serving his country he worked for the American Locomotive Company for 20 years. More recently, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Schenectady from where her retired after 25 years of service. Mr. Nitschke loved traveling all over the world. He was a fine craftsman of wood and also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Rod is the beloved husband of over 57 years to Jean E. Viele Nitschke. He is the devoted father of Kathy Nitschke of Augusta, ME and Beth Nitschke of Hiram, ME. He is the cherished grandfather of Benjamin Hale of Orono, ME. Mr. Nitschke is the brother of Edward Nitschke of Concord, NH and Jane Dunster of Schenectady. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenridge Cemetery, Saratoga Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Rodmond P. Nitschke.
