Roger J. Augliera

September 27, 1942 — March 2, 2012

SLINGERLANDS – Roger J. Augliera, 69, of Slingerlands, passed away Friday March 2, 2012 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Queens, New York, and was the son of the late Charles and Ethel Augliera. After high school, Roger had served in the US Navy and was overseas in Okinawa and Taiwan.

Following his military service, Roger worked for Ny Telephone as a lineman. In 1982, Roger and his family moved upstate to Middleburgh and then Cobleskill shortly after. He worked in Albany for AT&T as a senior technician. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul for 20 years, and he donated his time as a teacher for the religious education program.

In 2002, Roger moved to Slingerlands but continued to work for Avaya Communications, formerly a part of AT&T, and was a member of Christ the King church in Guilderland. He participated in the confirmation preparation team and was also a high school catechist.

In 2007, shortly after his retirement from Avaya, Roger was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He made a pledge to God that if he survived the surgery, he would dedicate his time helping people. Following his survival, he volunteered his time at the Guilderland Food Pantry. Roger then joined Residents Encounter Christ and spent many weekends participating in ministries at Great Meadows and Washington Correctional Facility.

He is survived by five children, Theresa of Schoharie, N.Y., Joseph of Philadelphia, P.A., Christian of Central Bridge, N.Y., Justin of Meridian, I.D., Sarah of Austin, T.X., and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday morning at Christ the King Church at 11:00 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumpter Ave., Guilderland. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at Church on Wednesday at 5:30 for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Memorial contributions may be made to The Guilderland Food Pantry, 2291 Western Ave, Guilderland, N.Y. 12084, or The Residents Encounter Christ, P.O. Box 14474, Albany, N.Y. 12212.
