Albany-

Ronald J. Smith, 79, passed away Monday, March 23, 2020 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Ronald was the son of the late Harry Thon and Margaret (Reilly) Smith. Ronald was the devoted husband of over 56 years, to Valerie (Deverell) Smith.

Ronald proudly served with the United States Army, Army National Guard (Sergeant 1st Class), and New York Guard (Command Sergeant Major). He was also a proud member of the 210th Armored Battalion Association, Sheehy-Palmer Post #6776, American Legion #1040 and Fort Orange #30. He also never missed the annual China Beach remembrance event to support our Veterans.

As a civilian, he took on various careers/roles in order to provide a good life for his family. Ronald enjoyed going to Racino in Saratoga and trips to Cape Cod with his family. He always had a larger than life smile and treated everyone he encountered with kindness and respect. He enjoyed life to the fullest while spending time with his family and friends. Birthdays, holidays and family picnics were some of his happiest times.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his stepfather, Harvey Smith and sister, Joanne Smith.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Valerie Smith and his sister, Catherine McGrath (William). He is the proud father of, Rodney (Donna) Smith, David (JoAnna) Smith, Christopher Smith, Leslie Gifford (Mike) and Jennifer Smith. He is the adored grandfather of Aaron Smith, Angelina Heidelmark (Matthew McCauslin), Colin Smith, Katelyn Smith, Delaney Smith, Nicole Gifford, Ashley Gifford, and great grandfather of Keele McCauslin.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private.
