Rose Marie Scrodanus

March 12, 1947 — January 5, 2024

NISKAYUNA - Rose Marie Scrodanus (née Sgarlata) passed peacefully on January 5th, 2024. Born in Troy, NY, she was the loving and devoted daughter of the late Joseph O. Sgarlata and Helen Martini Sgarlata.

Rose Marie was the doting wife to her beloved husband C. David Scrodanus of Niskayuna.

Rose Marie, a cum laude graduate, of Sage Junior college of Albany and State University of New York at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School in 1972. She started her legal career at the Department of Motor Vehicles later that year, was promoted several times and served as the Director of DMV's Legal Bureau where she remained until June 2001. While working at DMV, Rose Marie received seven distinguished merit awards from five different Commissioners for her work in developing bus driver and commercial driver license standards and driver license qualification medical criteria, junior license qualifications and conditions for operation of vehicles, license revocation, court proceedings, legislation and regulations. She loved creating practical solutions to current vehicle and traffic issues from a driver safety perspective.

In June of 2001 she was appointed Contract Counsel for the State University of New York System Administration where she worked on virtually every type of contract agreement. In 2005, Rose Marie also became an adjunct professor of Law at the Sage Graduate School MBA program. She found teaching to be an exhilarating and rewarding endeavor. In January of 2011 until July of 2013, she served at the SUNY Research Foundation by functioning as outside contract counsel working on various agreements between the Research Foundation and vendors.

Outside of her work at DMV, SUNY Administration, The Research Foundation, and Sage Graduate School, Rose Marie loved helping others and in her later years assisted with many real estate closings, wills, and vehicle and traffic law tickets. Preforming these Pro Bono services was very rewarding for her.

Her love of family and assisting others in need of direction brought her joy. In addition to her husband, Rose Marie is survived by her children Ashley of Niskayuna, David (DJ) and his wife Theresa of East Greenbush, Charles and his wife Robin of Altamont, and Christine, OD, of Saugerties. She was the loving Nana of grandchildren Donnie, Gavin, and Elaine. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were her most important reason for being.
