Rose R. Skubis (1925 - 2024)
Rose Skubis, 98, of Schenectady, passed away on August 24, peacefully and quickly at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Herkimer, NY, December 27, 1925, to Pietro Cristiano and Maria Concetta Varano Cristiano who emigrated from Italy. Rose attended Herkimer schools and often recounted stories of fun times growing up with her seven siblings and other extended family.
Some time after graduation, she began work at a local grocery store where she met her future husband. They soon moved to Schenectady where they raised four children. Rose was a full-time homemaker before she started her career in real estate. She enjoyed helping countless families for more than 40 years finding their new homes and sold homes well into her 80’s!
Along with her work and raising four children, Rose was a self-taught tole painter and sold her paintings at local shops and craft fairs. She and her husband renovated and “flipped” homes long before the practice became mainstream.
Rose introduced her children to Cape Cod, one of her favorite places. They vacationed there annually every summer, often enjoying the Friday night music at the Chatham Bandstand.
Rose had a love of antiques and a great eye for decorating. She took much pride in her home. She was also very proud of her children and all their accomplishments.
Rose leaves behind her sons, Stanley J. Skubis, of Schenectady, and Walter A. Skubisz, Jr. of Milford, MA, daughter, Sharon Foerster, her husband, Don and son Dylan, all of Freeport, ME, and granddaughters, Mattie of Los Angeles, CA and Em. Rose always cherished time with her grandchildren, hearing about each’s adventures. Rose was also a well-loved Aunt and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Rose was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Walt, her daughter, Maria Derrico, and her seven siblings, Francis, Tom, Joe, Theresa, Angie, Dickie, and Peter.
Rose was known for her determination, strong will, and being a hard worker. She loved and sacrificed for her children throughout her life. She loved Italian bread, Italian food, and Godiva chocolates. She loved having fun at various casinos and her many trips to Puerto Rico with girlfriends and family.
Finally, Rose always hoped to pass away in her own home and that could not have been accomplished without the joyful and constant companionship of Demi Riley. Heartfelt thanks to Demi, and to the other professional caregivers and family who joined together to care for Rose at her life’s end. Rose will be sorely missed and always remembered.
Memorial service and internment will be private.
