Albany – Roy C. Matthews passed away Monday, April 20, 2009 at Albany Medical Center. He was born in Boston, MA, July 13th 1934. As a boy, he grew up in St. Andrews Episcopal Church where he served as a choir boy. He enjoyed scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. He joined the Marine Corps at age 18 and, during his service, was a member of the prestigious Sea Urchins Discovery and Rescue Team. During his 40 year career with New York Telephone Company, he worked his way up from Lineman to Fiber Optic Technician. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Board Member. He was one of the founding board members of the Good Samaritan Lutheran Home. He also volunteered as a Gray Man for the Red Cross at the Ann Lee Home.
He was the beloved husband and best friend of Virginia R. Tator Matthews, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary April 2nd. He is also survived by his favorite daughter Kimberly F. Scott of Linn Creek, MO; grandsons Andrew L. Scott of Olympia, WA, Thomas W. Scott of Kansas City, MO, and three great-grand-children; brother Robert Matthews and wife Carol of Albany and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one grandson Dwight H. Scott, his brothers, Russell and Gerald Matthews and Donald and Edward Bamberger and his sister Eleanor White.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 23rd at 12:30 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 1500 Western Ave., Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30 pm at the church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
