Russell W. Bilka, 71, of Waterford, NY, passed away on February 6, 2025, at Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on August 30, 1953, in the Bronx, Russell was the son of Eleanor Pappas and Arthur Bilka. From a young age, he had an adventourous spirit, which led him to serve in the U.S. Army for 22 years. During his time in the military, he was stationed in Germany and traveled throughout Europe and Asia, embracing new cultures and experiences.
After retiring from the Army, Russell worked in Kuwait for 5 years as a private U.S. military contractor to train soldiers in the Kuwait Army. Afterwards, he continued his life of service as a dedicated school bus driver for Durham School Services for 17 years. He took great pride in his work and was a friendly face to many students over the years.
In his free time, he was a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed going to school and sporting events. He was also a dedicated Mets fan and never missed a chance to watch a game, always cheering for his team with much loyalty.
Russell will be deeply missed by his mother, Eleanor; his brothers, Ronald and Randy; his son, Russell; his daughers, Dorene and Michelle; his grandson, Ryan; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur; his stepfather, John; and his brothers, Richard, Robert, and Roy.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Russell's life on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 5-8 pm at the Troy Motor Boat & Canoe Club, 763 1st Ave., Troy, NY 12182. His final resting place will be in Saratoga National Cemetery in the spring, where he will be honored privately for his service to our country.
Russell's kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy is one of laughter, compassion, and pride.
