Niskayuna- Russell L. Slater, 56, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday December 24, 2017 at Ellis Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Born on September 28, 1961, he was the youngest child of Josephine Slater of Niskayuna.
Russ graduated from Niskayuna High School in 1979. His passion for cooking led to the opening of the Carillion Restaurant in Ticonderoga in 1988. He ran a very successful business for 24 years until closing in 2011 due to illness. Russ was a faithful NY Jets fan and he enjoyed spending time at Brant Lake in the Niska Beach Association since 1963.
In addition to his mother, Russ is survived by his siblings Pamela (Jeffrey) Houston, Margie (Bill) Steffes, Cynthia (Michael) Riggi, and Jeffrey Slater. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Jana Houston, Gavin (Olivia) Houston, Kirstie Houston, Michael Riggi, Anthony Riggi, Jason Slater, Andrew Slater, and Nicholas Slater, a grandniece, Taylor Smaldone and grandnephews Blake Smaldone, Luke Houston, and Brendan Riggi.
The family gives special thanks to the staff of Ellis Hospital for their care and kindness, especially Doctors Schumacher, Salenger, Rockwell, Ford, and Patel.
Visitation will be at New Comer Funeral Home at 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, on Saturday December 30, 2017 from 10 am to12 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Ellis Hospital Foundation, or Wildwood Programs Foundation.
