Slingerlands - Salvatore J. Fiato, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 27, 2016 at his home. The son of the late Joseph and Martha (Viglucci) Fiato, Sal was born on October 27, 1923 in Albany, NY. A member of our Nation's Greatest Generation, Sal was a proud veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. Sal was a survivor of Iwo Jima and completed 18 invasions aboard the USS Humphreys (APD-12). He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific (5 stars), American Theatre, Philippine Liberation (2 Stars) ribbons, the Good Conduct and the Bronze Star Medals.
Upon returning from the War, Sal married, Kale M. McNaughton and began his career as a New York City Master Hair Stylist. An entrepreneur for over 60 years, they owned and operated The New Yorker Hair Stylist and Taco Pronto in Albany. Sal was a lifelong learner and a man of many interests; he was a World Champion Skeet Shooter, trained bird dogs, and was a gifted artist and painter. Sal had a passion for the outdoors, he considered himself God's Caretaker of his farm, where he visited daily and met his beloved wife, Christine. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Sal is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Christine (Waggoner) Fiato; his children: Michael (Gayle) Fiato, Martha Fiato and Mona (Kevin) George; his step-children: Audra (Robert) Jones, Bridget M. Cooke, Shawn Maloy and Cassandra (Jason) Maloy-Dambrose; 11 grandchildren:Sasha (Paul)Durand, Sonya (Ryan) Conley, Amy Fiato, Kristin Fiato, Heather Fiato,Jared George, Peter George, Hayley George, Gavin George, Lacey Goodrich and Rachel Lainhart and 9 step-grandchildren; four great-grandsons: Dillon Durand, Keane Degener, Pierce Conley and Avery Goodrich-Kurtz, a great-granddaughter (Baby Girl Conley) on the way and one step-great-grandson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, Sal was predeceased by his first wife, Kale; his children: Mark J. Fiato and Miriam Fiato and his 8 siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Mater Christi Catholic Church, 35 Hurst Avenue, Albany, NY. Family and friends will be received at the church between 10 am - 11 am. Burial with military honors will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
