LATHAM - Salvatore I. Prividera Sr., 78, of Latham passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Albany on February 25, 1940, the youngest child of Ignazio and Lucia Trovato Prividera. The mothers of his children, Sue Curione Prividera and Kathryn Webster Prividera, await him in heaven along with his sisters, Carmella, Angela and Mary.
He is survived by his brother, Mario Prividera, of Leland, NC; his sons, John I. (Scott) Prividera of Loudonville and Salvatore I. (Laurie) Prividera Jr. of Colonie, his daughter, Sabrina I. (William) Durivage of Latham; his grandchildren, Dominic Prividera, Tyler Durivage, Gabrielle Durivage, and Jason (Whitney) Zink and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many good friends and neighbors.
Sal served in the United States Navy before fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a fireman. He served on the Albany Fire Department for 31 years, rising to the rank of Captain before retiring from Engine 9 in 1991. While serving as a lieutenant, he was an arson investigator and responsible for the operation of the department's first arson investigation unit.
A Life Member of Latham Fire Department, Sal rose to the rank of Chief and later served on the administrative side as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is the only individual to have served the department in all three capacities. He was recognized as the department's Fireman of the Year in 1973. Sal shared his knowledge as a New York State Fire Instructor.
He was a longtime member of the Colonie Elks Lodge, BPOE #2192 in Latham.
Sal loved to cook for family and friends. In his later years, he enjoyed sharing his family recipes and teaching his children and grandchildren how to prepare them. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially with his family.
Sal's family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at St. Peter's Hospital for their compassionate care of our father.
Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet.
Services to celebrate Sal's life will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at the funeral home. The procession will pass the Latham Fire Department for the Last Call Ceremony before going to St. Pius X Church in Loudonville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment services and Military Honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont.
