COLONIE - Samuel J. Matthews, 78, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side, on Monday, March 26, 2012 at The Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital.
Samuel was born on April 1, 1933 in Albany and was the son of the late Samuel A. and Cecelia (Wachtel) Matthews. He worked as a courier for Armory Garage in Albany for 27 years. He was truly a family man, always enjoyed spending time with family.
Samuel is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Matthews; his devoted children, Harold (Brenda) Matthews and Beth (Paul) Martin; his cherished grandchildren, M.J., Michael, Tricia, and Sam; his sisters, Cecelia Kalamejski and Joan VanWormer; his brother, Bob Matthews; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Bader and Irene VanWormer.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the care that was given to Samuel by the staff at The Hospice Inn, Dr. Lev Barats, M.J., and Brenda.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Samuel J. Matthews.
