WATERVLIET – Sandra J. Wood, 70, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011 at Samaritan Hospital, Troy after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in Malden, MA.
Sandy worked for the New York State Nurses' Pension and Benefits Fund for over 20 years. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed cruising, taking bus trips, eating out with friends, and trips to Panera on Saturday mornings after WW. She loved watching her grandchildren in their various sports and activities, her annual vacations to Maine, and watching the Red Sox and Patriots on TV. Sandy always looked forward to group activities with The Circle of Hope, working for Board of Elections and crafting blankets. She was well known for making holiday cookies and helping her grandchildren with many fundraisers.
She is survived by her loving children; daughter Pam (Wood) LaSarso and her husband, Thomas, of Endwell, NY; son Bruce Wood and his wife, Michelle, of Three Rivers, MA; grandchildren Craig and Bryan LaSarso, Brandon and Alyssa Wood, and Jesse Katawicz. Special friends Don and Marie Graham, Dawn Mirabile, and Pat Garside also survive.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Wu and Dr. Doyle, Erika, Charlene, staff, and the many Doctors and nurses at Albany Memorial Hospital and Samaritan Hospital for their kindness; Susan from the Circle of Hope for her special care and generosity, and Linda Whelton and the NYSNA family. Sandy's children are forever grateful for the countless hours and support Don and Marie Graham, and Dawn Mirabile have given their mother during this time, and Pat Garside and Ellie Barton for being such wonderful friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155 – South of Central Ave.) Memorial calling hours will precede the service from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sandy had fought and won a courageous battle with breast Cancer twice. She joined an organization called Circle of Hope which is dedicated to helping women and their families dealing with breast cancer. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Capital Region Circle of Hope Foundation, 1365 Washington Avenue, Suite 200, Albany, New York 12206 in Sandy's name.
