Sandra Gail Katkov Reuss passed away at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home on Wednesday, January 26, 2022.
Sandy lived in the Albany area since 1967, first in Guilderland, and then for the last 32 years in downtown Albany. She was born in Port Colborne, Canada on April 22nd, 1939 to Ivan Katkov and Shirley (Dolson) Katkov, and was married to Robert William Reuss, until he died in 1974.
The cause of death was COVID-19.
Sandy was a cheerful person, with an effervescent and fun-loving personality, who made friends easily and had many over the years. She faced many hardships and challenges in her life, and demonstrated a profound resilience in the way she kept moving forward in life, with courage, grace and involvement in her community. Her move from the Guilderland suburbs to urban life in downtown Albany as a 48 year old single woman reflected her willingness to embrace change with enthusiasm and to explore new experiences.
When her husband Bob died in 1974, she coped with her grief in part by creating a chapter of Widowed Person Service in Albany, and subsequently getting a BA in Sociology from the College of Saint Rose. She was a volunteer at Refer Switchboard in the 70s, and had a career with Albany County Social Services for many years, retiring in 2001.
During her retirement, Sandy enjoyed her cats, following the news, playing scrabble with friends, getting to know people in the Washington Park neighborhood where she lived, traveling back to Canada to visit family, volunteering, and visiting with old friends from Guilderland.
Sandy was pre-deceased by her brothers James and Paul, and is survived by her daughter, Wendy of Ballston Spa, Sue of Buffalo, and her son Rob of Asheville, North Carolina. She is remembered fondly by many others who had the honor and pleasure of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
