In loving memory of Sharon A. Grant who passed away at age 79, on August 5, 2023, in the home she loved.
Born on March 11, 1944, in Rensselaer, New York, Sharon was the daughter of the late Mary (Ayers) Gottschalk and Baltus A. Gottschalk.
Sharon was a graduate of Vincentian Institute High School, in Albany, New York, in 1961. She grew up in Loudonville, New York and was a resident of Albany County the majority of her life.
After high school, Sharon began working in Albany for the State of New York. In the late 1960's she accepted a transfer to New York City, where she worked with the Department of Taxation, and then the Department of Mental Hygiene. In the early 1970's Sharon transferred back to Albany, where she continued to work in the supervisory role for the Department of Mental Hygiene for the majority of her career until her retirement in 1996.
Sharon was an animal lover, and she especially loved cats. During the 1980's and 1990's Sharon was a member of the Mohawk Valley Cat Fancier's organization, and she ran her own cattery named Sweetsland Cattery. She enjoyed participating in cat shows and traveling throughout the country, along with her mother, Mary and niece, Christine, as her helpers. She attended many large cat shows during the late 1980's.
Throughout her life Sharon was an avid reader and in her retirement years she enjoyed a long-distance book club with her sister, Anna. Sharon was an expert at knitting and crocheting. During her retirement Sharon also became an avid gardener and she took great pride in her yard and garden. She enjoyed walking every day to stay active during retirement.
Sharon loved baseball and was a very loyal Met fan.
Sharon was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Anna (Gottschalk) McClane, of
Ventura County California, Mary C. Gottschalk of Menands, New York, and Robert A. Gottschalk of Orange County, New York. Sharon is also survived by her niece Christine McClane Tesi, (John) of Ventura, California, a nephew, Michael DeSanta of Schenectady, New York, and a great niece and great nephew, Jenna B. Tesi and Joseph C. Tesi, of Ventura County, California, and many cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Sharon's life will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at New Comer Funeral home located at 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, New York, 12205. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, located at 983 Watervliet Shaker Road, Albany New York 12205. A luncheon will take place after the interment, the details for which will be provided at the memorial service.
