ALBANY - Sheila A. Mears, age 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November, 24, 2021, at Our Lady of Mercy in Guilderland Ctr. She was born March 6, 1943, in Albany, NY. Sheila was a graduate of Albany High School. She married George Mears on April 28, 1962 in Sylvan Beach, NY. She worked at various local banks and recently retired from the State of New York Comptroller's Office. Sheila made lasting friends every place she worked, and brought humor and creativity to all of her roles.
Sheila was a long time member of the North Bethlehem FD Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the Albany County Ladies Auxiliary, serving multiple roles in both organizations.
Saying Sheila loved to travel with her husband and friends is an understatement. Cruise adventures topped her list with over 30 across the globe on her punch card. Sheila never met a beach she didn't like, and took advantage of the many sights and shops on the islands she loved to visit.
Sheila shared her sharp wit often, and she was always into something creative. Many will remember, or were recipients of, her costumes, ceramics, or amazingly detailed and beautifully decorated cakes. In recent years she was busy researching family history and was united with family she didn't know were out there.
Weekly Sunday meals with family were a regular multi- generational centerpiece for over 50 years. Her sense of humor, which included many moments of improvisational comedy with her brother, will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, George; mother, Leah; children, PJ (Andi) and Jeff (Joyalle); brother Michael (Debbie); half-brother Stewart (Kristi); grandchildren, Aaron and Grace; nephew Bobby (Amanda), niece Rachael and many lifelong friends. She was predeceased by infant daughter Amy, and Father Harold.
Family and friends are invited to the New Comer Funeral Home 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie on Sunday November 28 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am to greet family, and a service at 10:00. A time to reminisce and Shiva will be held at 23 Frances Lane, Albany, NY following the burial service, from noon to 6:00 pm on Sunday and 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Monday.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Sheila's name to No. Bethlehem Fire Dept, 589 Russell Road, Albany 12203 or a charity of your choice.
