Sherman G. Van Alstyne, 75, of Nassau, NY went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Van Rensselaer Manor, North Greenbush, NY with his loving family by his side after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born on August 23, 1940 and raised in North Albany, he is the son of the late Catherine E. Robitaille and Sherman Lawton Van Alstyne. Sherman attended St. Joseph's Academy in Albany, the class of 1958. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California and also served for 2 years overseas in Japan, Thailand and Viet Nam. Upon his honorable discharge Sherman started working in the sheet metal industry at Tougher Industries and became a proud member of Local #83 for over 40 years. He was an active member and one of the founding members of Calvary Chapel of Albany (now Reach Out Fellowship) for many years before his illness. Close to his heart was his love for Israel which he visited twice and expressed a desire to live there one day. He was also a faithful member of the Jews for Jesus organization and the Full Gospel Business Men's Association for many years.
Sherman is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth A. (Betty) and Ken Seyboth of Ballston Lake, NY and his brother, Robert J. Van Alstyne of Nassau, NY. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Cheryl Shepard, Mark Seyboth, Scott Seyboth and Lindsey Van Alstyne & his grand nieces and nephews: Morgan, Kristina, Nicholas, Dylan and Jonathan; and several cousins.
Sherman's family wish to thank all of the nurses and staff of the VRM, C-3 Wing, for their care, kindness and support they provided as Sherman's health declined over the last 3 years; a special thank you to Emmer, Karen, Alexa, Patti, Lisa, Lori and Patrice for their outstanding and warm compassion.
