Sherry Garrett Wielt, AGE: (She would say 'none of your business!') passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at her daughters home in Saratoga on Monday 27 July 2020.
Sherry Jean was the daughter of Francis W. and Edith (Hodgins) Garrett.
Growing up Sherry loved to be outside and as near to any horse she could find. In fact, when they delivered milk by horse and wagon in the 40's, she would great "Dolly" with any treat she could find.
It was love at first sight in the 50's when she met my dad "Billy Wielt" with his buckskin fringed jacket at the roller rink. And when he said he had a HORSE? It was a done deal!
They married and had the farm she always wanted in Galway, New York in the 60's where they raised my brother Michael Slade and me. My dad bought her the first horse, Melody, which she would ride with my little brother strapped to her while I was at school.
She would constantly be searching out the perfect Christmas tree on these rides, mom LOVED Christmas.
In the mid 80's mom ventured down to Naples, Florida and fell in love with the town. She enjoyed many sunsets at 7th Ave. S. She urged me to move down with her and I'm glad I did, marrying Michael B. Rucker and her dream of having grandbabies finally came true. For being such a tomboy, her love of babies always amazed me.
Mom was fortunate enough to go to her beloved Ireland with close cousin Lynn...and the girls had many adventures in Hawaii, England and a few cruises.
Granddaughter Tory shares her grandma's spunky independence and they were two peas in a pod. Grandson Cole William and she shared a special bond and love of fast cars. Memories of grandma's drag racing her five speed Mitsubitchi are memories they will never forget! Those kids were EVERYTHING to her.
The call of the upstate New York seasons called her home to Galway in 2006 where she and my dad took care of each other til he passed away in Oct. 2018. Once again she headed to Florida to help raise her great grandbaby Sterling. She loved that little boy.
She was very proud of her Irish ancestry and was known to have a "wee nip" now and then.
Predeceased by her brother Robert, she is survived by brother Ronald Garrett (Grant), cousins Lynn Sullivan and David Dolan. Daughter Cindy Rucker (Steven Nevins), son Michael Slade Wielt (Trish), granddaughter Tory, grandson Cole William, great grandbaby Sterling. Several nieces and nephews and a very special niece Susan (Fred) Sutch. They were horse soulmates.
Sherry often said, "If Jesus came tonight, I'd be ready to go!" My dad brought her to the Seventh-day Adventist faith and she remained such her whole life. Christ was her strength.
Donations to her church on 1413 Quackenbush Rd., Duanesburg, NY, 12306, or any animal shelter would make her Irish eyes smile.
In keeping with Sherry's wishes, service and burial will be private. May the road rise up to meet you....
