ALBANY – Shirley Anne Messmer, 80, of Albany, formerly of South Royal Dr., Colonie, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Teresian House, after a long battle with emphysema. Born in Niagara Falls, NY she was the daughter of the late G. Evans and Mary Quinn Newcomb. She was a Colonie resident since 1961. Mrs. Messmer was a graduate of the Loretta Abbey, Toronto, Canada. Shirley lived in Toronto until the age of 23, before moving to Ontario, Canada, where she met and married her husband, Erich in May of 1956. Mrs. Messmer took great pride in being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her top priority was her family and spending time with them. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends. Shirley was a long time communicant of the Church of St. Clare in Colonie. She was the beloved wife of the late Erich Messmer. She is the loving and devoted mother of Paul, David and Bonnie Messmer of Colonie. She is the cherished grandmother of Erich Messmer. She is the cousin of Margaret Holden and the best friend of Ruth McMahon. She is also survived by the Messmer family in Germany and her friends at the Teresian House. Shirley's family would like to thank all of the staff of the Teresian House 6th floor A-wing for the love and support they gave to Shirley during her illness.
Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave) then to the Infant of Prague Chapel, Teresian House at 11:00 a.m. where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Teresian House, 200 Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, NY 12203 in memory of Shirley A. Messmer.
