Shyam Prasad Muraka Ph.D.

Clifton Park- Shyam Prasad Murarka Ph.D., 81, passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 with his loving family by his side. He was the son of the late Bihari Lal and Suti Murarka. Shyam was the devoted husband to the late Saroj Murarka. They were married for 58 years.

Shyam received Ph.D. in Metallurgy and Materials Science as well as a Ph.D. in Chemistry. He has 298 published papers, 6 books authored and 21 patents. Shyam was a thesis advisor for 30 masters and 25 Ph.D. degrees.

He was a devout practicing Hindu.

Shyam enjoyed gardening, loved to cook and was an avid reader of fiction and non fiction books. Shyam enjoyed watching Minnesota Vikings football and listening to Indian classical music in his free time. Most of all, he believed in writing his thoughts and discussing his research ideas and publications.

Shyam is survived by his son, Sumeet Murarka (Pamela) and their children, Anisha, Sean; additional grandchildren, Maya and Elina; brother, Ajit Murarka (Sushma) and their children, Anup and Dr. Putul Allen; and many friends and family.

In addition to his wife and parents, Shyam is predeceased by his son, Dr. Amal Murarka (Margi Rosenthal); and his sister, Jivacchi.

A funeral service will be held Sunday October 24, 2021 starting at 9:30 am for an hour at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY 12189.
