Albany- Sofya Orshansky, 92, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2018 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany. Born on December 5, 1925 in Kiev, Soviet Union, Sofya was the daughter of the late Isaac and Lyubov (Offman) Orshansky. When she was a small child, Sofya moved with her family to Leningrad, Russia. During World War II, when Leningrad was blockaded she managed to make it out to Siberia with her mother. Before she was evacuated she survived the first winter, where she had to extinguish fire bombs on the roof of her apartment building. Her father, who was a bakery manager did not survive the winter. After the war, she returned to Leningrad where she received her degree in economics and worked as director of finance for several large companies. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1990 and settled in Glens Falls, NY. She moved to Albany in 2007.
She is survived by her son Boris (Irina) Orshansky; her grandchildren: Igor (Betta) Orshansky and Masha (Brent) Heesemann; her great-granddaughter, Katya Orshansky.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Lev Rosetstein and her brother Rafael Gribov.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 8 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Burial will follow at Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
