Schenectady- Sonia "Sunny" Joy Goudreau, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, passed away on February 20, 2023, at her nursing home in Guilderland, New York. She was born on July 22, 1938, in Lewiston, Maine, to Jules and Bernadette Goudreau.
Sonia is survived by two of her four children: James F. Kittredge (Rose) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Jennifer K. Ismail (Labeeb) of San Francisco, California. Her sons Michael L. Kittredge and Steven S. Kittredge predeceased her. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Hazel Smith (Terrance) of Frisco, Texas, and Stephanie VanAlstyne (Brian) of Selkirk, New York, and her grandson Jonathan Kittredge (Amanda), who is currently stationed in the army in Katterbach, Germany. She is survived by her three great-grandchildren, Arabella and Amora Kittredge, and Ellis Smith. Sonia was preceded in death by three siblings: Janice Plourde, Sandy Webber, and Gary Goudreau. She is survived by her three siblings: Thomas Goudreau (Tootie), Frank Goudreau, and John Goudreau (Jennifer), all of whom reside in Maine. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sonia graduated from Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Maine, where she was a majorette and loved being involved in school activities. In 1960, she married and after two sons eventually moved to Schenectady, NY, where she worked for several physicians over the years. In 1977, she began working for Dr. James M. Strosberg at Sunnyview Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Schenectady, NY, where she served as the practice manager and helped grow the practice to four rheumatologists before her retirement in the early 2000s.
Sonia was a devout Roman Catholic and enjoyed volunteering at her parish, St. Madeline's Sophie in Guilderland. She loved traveling to see her two kids outside of NY and enjoyed all the sights. She also loved going back to Maine to any beach or any harbor and stopping in Pine Point, Maine, for fresh-caught "lobstah" each time she traveled there.
Sonia was devoted to her family, and she delighted in family gatherings. She loved decorating for the holidays and looked forward to the holiday season each year. The lights, the shopping, the tree, wrapping presents, and the Christmas food – Sonia loved it all!
In her spare time and for many years, Sonia was an avid antique collector. She even had a booth in a local antique shop in Guilderland for some years. She loved old oil lamps and had a collection of over 400! She also loved to collect many special teacups. She had an extensive collection of Annie memorabilia too, and many, MANY other things.
Sonia will be dearly missed by many who knew and loved her.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Newcomer Cremations and Funerals, 181 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham from 1pm-4pm
