Schenectady- Sonia Gail Retajczyk, 85, passed away on November 23, 2023. She was born on September 12, 1938 in Schenectady, New York to the late Julia Huzar Kittle and Michael Huzar.
Sonia met Robert Retajczyk in 1961 and they were married on May 18,1963.
Sonia had many interests, such as gardening, cooking, baking, painting, reading, and she had a great love for animals. Sonia had an incredible work ethic and dedicated 25 years to St. Clare's Hospital as an executive secretary.
Sonia was a selfless and loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother. Sonia enjoyed four grandchildren, whom she loved completely. She was able to share countless activities with her grandchildren, while also organizing long lasting family traditions, which continue today.
Sonia and Robert loved to travel and have their get aways. Favorites included: Cape May, Cape Cod, the Isle of Palms, and Vermont for leaf peeping. Sonia also enjoyed her annual "sisters trip" to Manchester, Vermont.
Sonia is predeceased by her stepfather Clive Kittle, and sister, Priscilla Keefner.
Sonia is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Retajczyk Sr., daughter, Suzanne O'Lena (Mark), son, Robert Retajczyk Jr. (Lynne), grandchildren, Kenzie and Riley O'Lena and Patrick and Eric Retajczyk. Survivors also include Sonia's loving sisters, Patricia Fernald and Shirley DeMartino. Sonia was blessed with a wonderful extended family of sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Calling hour will be held Wednesday November 29, 2023 from 9-10am, held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals 343 New Karner Road Colonie, NY 12205.
Following calling hour, A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated, Wednesday November 29, 2023 at 11:00am held at St. Gabriel The Archangel Church 3040 Hamburg Street, Rotterdam, NY 12303. Following mass, Interment will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery Niskayuna, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Sonia's name to the Animal Protective Foundation, Maple Avenue, Schenectady, NY or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
