Albany - Sophie Agnes Steates, 89, of Latham passed away peacefully on December 18, 2020 in Albany. Born on November 3, 1931 in Steuben, New York, Sophie was the daughter of the late Paul A and Mary Frances (Malinowski) Sawicki.
She grew up in Remsen and spent most of her adult life in Latham. Sophie was a member and a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She worked as a Realtor in the Capital District for many years. Sophie loved spending time with her family. She had a great love for gardening and bird watching. Sophie also loved her many dogs and cats over the years.
Sophie was predeceased by her former husband, Donald F. Steates.
Sophie is survived by two daughters, Donnie Brownsey (Peter) of the Adirondacks and Sandey Decker (Doug) of Cohoes, 11 grandchildren, Chris Brownsey (Christine) of Scarborough, Maine, Noah Brownsey (Kate) of Niskayuna, Philip Brownsey (Rachel) of Sacramento, Calif., Joel Brownsey (Manobi) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Paul Brownsey (Cyndy) of Niskayuna, Emerson Childs (Amber) of Schaghticoke, Jen Smith (Jeff) of Niskayuna, Cindy Deuell (Adam) of Newport News, VA., Patrick Decker of Newport News,VA., Sharon Pailley of Watervliet and Barbara Decker of Cohoes; and 15 great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Megan, Cameron, Oliver, Elliot, Silas, Simona and Florence Brownsey, Autumn Childs, Summer Allen, Austin, Ben and Connor Smith and Natalie and Leah Pailley.
Special thanks to the staff of Teresian House (2A) for the love, care and support they gave Sophie and our family over the past several weeks and years.
A Celebration of Sophie's life will be held in the spring.
