Colonie- Spencer (Skip) F. LaMountain, 87, went home to the Lord surrounded by the comfort and care of family and friends on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Born in Ticonderoga, NY, he was the son of the late Fredrick and Mildred (Boyle) LaMountain, and was the beloved husband of 36 years to Ginni M. (Hills) LaMountain.
He grew up hunting and fishing in Port Henry, NY until joining the army at 20 years old. He served for 7 years from 1951-1958, rising to the rank of Specialist Second Class in an ordnance company stationed in Germany. He received multiple commendations during his time in service.
After his honorable discharge, he began to build a career in refrigeration and air conditioning that included teaching at a local college and running the sales department at a plumbing company. He would eventually start his own successful business, which he ran for many years. Spence was a fixture at every Greek diner in the capital district, and had a hand in building or servicing local institutions such as Latham 76, Gateway Diner, Halfmoon Diner, and many more. There was nothing he could not fix or build
He had a passion for the outdoors, especially the Adirondacks, and told countless stories of the places and people with whom he hunted and fished all across the mountains and valleys of that region.
Spence's skill with his hands was matched only by his patience and willingness to help anyone who crossed his path. He was loved by all who knew him, and was at his happiest surrounded by family and close friends, telling stories of things he had done and seen throughout his storied life. He spent his later years in Niskayuna and then Colonie with the love of his life.
Spence is survived by his wife Ginni; daughter Rhea (Mark) Shea and children David and Kevin; son Frank (Sheri) Prevratil and children Seth, Frankie, and Krista; son Todd (Krysteen) LaMountain; son Neil (Tracy) Prevratil and children Allison and Abby, and son Scott (Megan); LaMountain and children Spencer, Josephine, Silas, Ezra, and Seneca.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 7pm where calling hours will be held prior starting at 4pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, 12205.
