Albany- Spiros Lembesis of Albany passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, April 23, 2018. He was born on August 25, 1934 in Athens, Greece to the late Parthena Georgiadou Lembesis and the late Spiros Lembesis.
He was married for 52 years and is survived by his loving wife Victoria Samaras Lembesis, his loving children Vasilis (Georgia) Lembesis and Maria (Greg) Sokaris and his 4 grandchildren Alex, Spiro, John, and Dean.
At 7 yrs. old and through times of famine in WWII, he walked barefoot up and down the northern mountains of Greece to collect water for his widowed mother and siblings. The consummate provider, he continued to support his family as a young adult and later would tirelessly commit himself to his children and grandchildren. A modest man, Spiros was happiest with the simple joys which included a cup of his favorite Greek coffee, reading his morning newspaper, spending time with his wife and children, and ensuring they would not endure the hardships he had experienced in his own life.
Having emigrated from Greece in 1969 with his wife and young son, Spiros was employed for over 25 years as a carpenter. He is remembered for his love of the sea, and the peace he found when fishing off the shores of Athens and later in Cape Cod with his family. His other passion was in his artistry and custom work as a craftsman in the furniture trade. Always an exceptional student with meager means, he found work as an apprentice, where he honed his special attention to detail to everything he created. Whether he was building the home his family lives in, lovingly creating furniture for his children and grandchildren, or assisting friends and neighbors whenever called upon, he did so with both pride and gratitude for the opportunity to share his talent.
The family wishes to thank everyone who helped them through this difficult time including the professional and compassionate staff at St. Peter's Hospital E.R., ICU, and Hospice Inn.
A calling hour will be held to visit with family and friends on Monday, April 30th at 10 a.m. in the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church with a service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in the Graceland Cemetery. If you wish to remember Spiros, please make a donation in his name to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Rd., Albany, NY, 12208.
