SCHENECTADY - Stanley Benjamin Dombkowski, 86, died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at St. Clare's Hospital, husband of Rose C. Dombkowski and father of Denise Dombkowski Hopkins of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Brian S. Dombkowski, who died in 1978 at age 23. Proud grandfather of Brian Hopkins of Washington, DC and Ariel Hopkins of Boston, MA. Brother of Erwin Dombkowski of Las Vegas, NV and Sister Mary Beata, Sisters of the Resurrection, Castleton, NY. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Nott Terrace High School, Stanley was an Air Force corporal in World War II, serving in the Pacific theater. He was employed for many years by the General Electric Company in the steam-turbine department. He was an avid golfer who once had a hole-in-one, and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. He and his brother, Wally, who died in World War II, established a semi-pro hockey league in Schenectady before the war.
A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Glenville. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Stanley may be made to the organization that allowed him to remain home for as long as he did, to Umbrella, 509A Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12305.
