COHOES-Stephen Fletcher Lent, 65 of Cohoes, NY, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Mt. Kisco, NY on Aug. 18, 1948 to the late Sheldon and Anina Maria "Nina" (Bernardo) Lent. He was raised in Katonah, NY and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, also in Katonah. He graduated from Katonah Elementary School, John Jay H.S. (Cross River, NY) and UAlbany (NY) with a B.S. degree in Mathematics in 1971. He also attended Union College in their graduate studies program, and Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Rotterdam. In 2005, he earned a master's degree in Biblical studies from Golden State School of Theology.
He was hired out of UAlbany as a Programmer/analyst with GE in Schenectady, NY where he worked for 23 years at GE locations including Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, GE Global Research Center and the Schenectady GE plant. He also worked as a consultant for Albany-area computer consulting companies and was an employee for the NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) in Schenectady, NY, and the NYS Dept. of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) in Albany, NY, from which he retired in 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Vicky (Perry) Lent, two children, Yancy Lent (Johanna) of Rowley, MA, and Jessica Turner of Cohoes, NY, and five grandchildren (Kateri and Cheyenne Turner; Emma, Ethan, and Eliot Lent); and by his sisters, Nina Marie Kellogg of Katonah, NY, and Judith Pitura of Patterson, NY; and cousins in West Palm Beach, FL, Selkirk, NY, Charleston, SC, and Oklahoma City, OK.
Mr. Lent was a member of the Schenectady Church of Christ in Niskayuna, NY from 1984 – 2004, and Grace Fellowship in Latham, NY from 2007 until his death, subsequent to having been born-again on March 1, 1977. He coached baseball with Scotia-Glenville Little League, Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth; Schenectady Jaycees (softball); Scotia-Glenville H.S. (JV softball) and Schenectady Christian H.S. (varsity baseball). His other interests included jogging; leading Bible studies at his home, church, local county jails and at offices where he was an employee or consultant; and refereeing several (4) high school sports. Mr. Lent was also involved with the local chapter of the Christian Business Men's Committee, of which he was chairman for a number of years. CBMC is dedicated to spreading the Gospel to men who are involved in business and who may or may not belong to a local church.
Mr. Lent at one point listed his goals in life, all of which had been accomplished at the time of his death:
See a Broadway play, Make one of those shots from half-court at the buzzer, Attend a professional sports event in at least 20 different cities, Fly on a jet, sea plane, helicopter, and glider, Plummet over a class V rapids on a raft, Log 40 scuba dives in the Caribbean, Go on an outrigger like on Hawaii 5-O, Win a tennis match, Go down a 'diamond' ski trail, Coach a team to an undefeated season, Quarterback a football team to an undefeated season, Win a golf league championship, Earn an advanced degree in karate, Referee a soccer, football, lacrosse and basketball game, Lead the league in batting percentage, Be president of a Christian organization
Write a computer program, Hit a home run on the first pitch of the season – twice, Be captain of a basketball team, Lead at least one person to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, Make it to the national championships in billiards, Write a book, and Bowl a 200 game.
The memorial service will be held Sunday at 12:30 at Wolfert's Roost Country Club in Albany. Friends, family and out of town guests are welcome to stay for lunch immediately following the memorial.
