Stephen Halasz

Stephen Halasz, 83, passed away peacefully at home on February 3nd. Born in Hungary in 1923, Stephen was an auto mechanic living in Budapest during the 1956 communist uprising. With his wife Magda and two year old son, Stephen lead his family to a new life in America. Arriving with literally the clothes they wore, he worked at Armory Garage while learning a new language, and his determination to provide for his family drove him toward a new life. As his family grew, Stephen went on to operate his own Flying A service station in Westmere through the 1960's, and he eventually retired from the Niagara Mohawk Power Company after 18 years of service. Stephen was president of the Hungarian General Benevolent Society in Schenectady and a lifetime member. He will be remembered as a person who would leave the house at anytime to help someone in need. Stephen is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years Magda, sons Stephen (Terry) Halasz of Austin, Texas, George (Kate) Halasz of Scotia, daughters Maria Halasz-Dees of East Berne, Eva Halasz of Long Island, His grandchildren will miss their loving Nagypapa; Marlaina, Clifton, Breanna, Austin, April and Brook.

Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at St. Margaret Mary Church at 11:30 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 pm at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.
