ALBANY- Susie McConagha, born September 14, 1923, of Albany, New York, died peacefully on Christmas morning. A well known personality at the Thruway Authority, she retired two months before her 92nd birthday. Born on a tenant farm in Tallassee, Alabama, she labored as a child. In WW II, she worked with the Tuskegee Airmen at their training grounds at the Tuskegee institute. Foregoing a formal education to help support her mother, she later moved to Albany and worked at Williams Press until it closed. Then she worked at GE in Schenectady and then 30 years at the Thruway Authority, retiring in 2015. A bright, lively and fearless personality with a big heart, she liked people and they liked her. A large group of co-workers would annually arrange a birthday party for her at the Saratoga Casino and her last one this October was absolutely delightful. She was blessed with many helpful neighbors and friends, and the family especially wants to thank her neighbor Roger and her friend Chuck for looking after her these last years. Proud of her well maintained home and car, she enjoyed her garden and flowers, and seasonal excursions for apple or blueberry picking. She was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church for many years, and cared for her mother and sister in their time of need.
Preceded in death by her sisters Fannie Mae, Mae Nell, and Roberta, she is survived by her sister Laverne of Tallassee Alabama, her loving daughter Mary Pleasure of Huntsville, Alabama, and grandchildren Rhonda, Dorinda and Alfred, plus numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours for family and friends will be at the New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie on January 3, 2020 from 5 to 7 p.m. A brief graveside service will be held on Saturday January 4 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park, Central Avenue, Schenectady. A special thanks to the Saratoga Hospice team.
