Theodore "Ted" Soltys

September 27, 1929 — January 21, 2016

Guilderland- Theodore (Ted) John Soltys, 86, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2016, while in hospice care at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center, following a brief illness. Ted was born on September 27, 1929, in Schenectady, New York. He was the youngest of 3 children born to Polish immigrants, Thomas and Rose Soltys. He was a devoted husband to Sandra (Murray) Soltys who he married on February 14, 1953 and shared 62 wonderful years together.

Ted was employed by General Electric at the R&D Center in Niskayuna, New York starting in 1948, until his retirement in 1990. His innovations received numerous patents for the company. Some of his accomplishments included his research work on the development of a revolutionary semiconductor diode laser, the first silicon wafers produced, and contract projects for the United States Government. Ted was an avid golfer, bowler and dart shooter, all of which he exceled at in various leagues during his lifetime. He managed Gruelich's Market/Newberry Gloves Little League team in 1969.

Ted's life was devoted to his family, and enjoyed his cats. He was good with his hands, and an excellent carpenter who built a home for his Mother, with the help of his son, in 1970. He had a passion for automobiles, primarily Pontiacs and Mopars. It wouldn't be out of the norm to see him washing and waxing his cars on a nice day. Ted was also an avid gardener who grew his own vegetables in the backyard.

He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Rose Soltys, and sisters, Lilian Westcott and Pauline Genevieve Soltys of Schenectady. Ted is survived by his loving wife Sandy of Guilderland, his children; son Theodore D. Soltys and his wife Lisa of Colonie; daughter Catherine J. Kulbako and her husband James of Rotterdam; daughter Christine R. Aros' and her husband Gene of Star Idaho; grandchildren Brendon J. Syndennis of Mission Viejo California, Brent T. Syndennis of Star Idaho, Breanah (Soltys) Sutton and her husband Jared of Boise Idaho, Theodore D. Soltys Jr. of Daytona Beach Florida; and Great Grandchild Teddy M. Sutton of Boise Idaho.

A private service was held on January 25, 2016 at New Comer Funeral Home, Albany, New York. A special thank you to Kingsway Nursing Home, especially David Clay, for Ted's comfort and care, and to Pastor J.C. Worsham of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society, in Ted's name, at Oakland Avenue, Menands, New York.
