ROTTERDAM-Theresa A. Amszynski died peacefully on July 7, 2014 after a long illness. She was 86. Theresa was born on June 17, 1928 in Schenectady, NY to the late Michael and Mary (Powers) Downs. She was the third youngest of eleven children. She met her husband to be, Robert Amszynski, a NY State Trooper, while she was waitressing at the old Howard Johnson's on Rt. 9 in Malta, NY. They were married for 52 years before his death in 2003.
Theresa was a long time communicant and active member of St. Gabriel's Church in Rotterdam. She was also a member of the Rotterdam Columbiettes (#5703) and held many positions in the organization including President. She worked for the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance for 12 years and retired in 1993 so that she could care for her husband during his long illness. She loved having company and the refrigerator was always full, just in case. In 2007 Theresa moved to Benicia, CA to be closer to her daughter.
Survivors include her four children Joseph Amszynski of Roswell, GA, Thomas (Diane) Amszynski of Colonie, NY, Robert (Deborah) Amszynski of Douglasville, GA and Kathleen (John) Hertia of Benicia, CA. Seven grandchildren, Amie, Nicole, Andrea, David, Ryan, Joey, and Lucas; and two great grandchildren Isabella and Olivia. She is also survived by one brother, Robert Downs of Rexford and one sister, Jeanne (Tom) Deveno of Malta and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband she was also predeceased by her sisters, Alice Beauregard, Helen Ward, Frances Weiss, Irene Wozniak and Marion Scrafford; her brothers John Downs, Joseph Downs and David Downs.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 Pm on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Rotterdam. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 9 AM prior to the Mass.
Entombment will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, NY.
