Thomas Arthur Duchesneau

d. May 10, 2006

TROY - Thomas Arthur Duchesneau, Tom passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Samaritan Hospital after a gallant battle against cancer. Tom was born in Keene, NH and attended Keene schools, graduating from Keene High School in 1963. His parents, Arthur "Sonny" and Esther Duchesneau, predeceased him. Tom attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He served honorably in the United States Army and returned to the Troy area where he made his home and became a member of a diverse and lively extended family who will miss his presence at local music events and will also miss his cooking at extended family gatherings.

While many people are involved in alumni activities, Tom's dedication to the RPI coffee house, Mother's Wine Emporium, was exceptional. As alumni advisor to Mother's for three decades, Tom's encyclopedic knowledge of folk music and musicians was an invaluable resource and a thread of consistency for the student staff who brought performers and audiences together year after year. Many performers were annual visitors, and the springtime spaghetti dinners that Tom organized were legendary events, bringing RPI alumnae together to share both the music and Tom's famous sauce.

Tom's musical interests were not limited to the Mother's stage. He was a faithful volunteer at the annual Old Songs festival in Altamont, NY and with Collar City Live, and he could be counted on as a presence at just about anything that involved folk music and singing.

The members of Tom's community would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Samaritan Hospital, Tom's friends at St. Peter's, and Father Hap Carrier at St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy.

Tom is survived by his sister, Karen Blanck (Dennis) of Tucson, Arizona, her two sons Mark and Matthew Leipert, and by brother, Michael Duchesneau of Tampa, Florida.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2006 at Mt. View Cemetery in Swanzey, NH. A memorial service is being planned by friends of Mother's Wine Emporium in the fall.

In lieu of flowers, Tom and his family request that donations be made in his name to RPI Student Union/Mother's Coffee House, 110-8th St, Troy, NY, 12180.
