Albany- Thomas Cunningham, 84, passed away, Thursday, November 20, 2014 peacefully with his family by his side. Thomas was the son of the late Dr. James and Nannette Cunningham. He was the husband of 52 years to the late Theresa Mileski.
Thomas's number one enjoyment was being with his family and having cook outs. He was an avid golfer who remembers every shot vividly. Thomas loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Thomas always enjoyed being up at Saratoga Race Course and was a well-known handicapper. Thomas enjoyed having a cocktail or two to end his day. Thomas proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. The Albany Native started working at the Times Union in 1954 as a copy boy and gradually moved up to Executive Sports Editor. He was a longtime sports editor and columnist and ended his time at the paper in 1991 as director of marketing and public relations. He retired in 1991, but continued to pick the races at Saratoga Race Course through 2005.
Thomas is survived by his children; Karen Millington (the late Michael Millington), Tim Cunningham (Karen), Michael Cunningham (Barbara), Nancy Susser (Billy). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren; Bryan (Amanda), Brittany, Ashley, Laura, Kyle, Sean, Samantha, Colleen and Nicole, and also lifetime friend, Frank Murphy.
Thomas is predeceased by his siblings; Dr. James Cunningham Jr. , Patsy Kennedy and Joan Welsh.
Calling Hours will be on Monday, November 24,2014 from 3:30 to 7:00pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. A service remembering Thomas will follow the calling hours at 7pm at the funeral home.
