NISKAYUNA-Ulisse Battista, 69, of Niskayuna passed away at Ellis Hospital on Thursday, December 19, 2013 following a brief illness. Ulisse was born in Ruviano Italy, the son of the late Antonio Battista and Maria Giovanna Mastropietro Battista. He attended Barber School in New York City and was a resident of Niskayuna for over 40 years. Ulisse established his own businesses and opened his first barbershop at 18 years old in Richmond Hill, Queens. His second barber shop was in Plaza 7 Groom shop in Latham and the third shop was shear technique in Schenectady. Since 1990, Ulisse owned and operated the Duo barber shop in Colonie. Ulisse had a warm, kind heart and personality. He opened his home and shop to everyone. Ulisse listened and often gave advice to his customers. He was a gentleman with class, who was devoted to his family and his community. Most importantly, he was a family man, who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He touched many lives, including his customers. Ulisse will be missed by all that knew him.
Ulisse is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Paolina (Riccio) Battista; his loving children Maria Giovanna Battista (Joseph E. Walter), Lisa Battista, and Paula Battista- Genter (John A. Genter, Jr.) and his cherished grandchildren Nicholas A. Lanaro, Gabriella Lanaro, Deanna Battista, Gianna Genter and Jenna Genter. He is also survived by his siblings Eugenio Battista, Nina Josephina Battista and Joseph Battista and nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family in Italy.
In addition to his parents, Ulisse was predeceased by his sister Rosa Battista Madonna.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 PM on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM on Monday, December 23, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 812 Union St. Schenectady.
Entombment will be at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
