ALBANY – Velma Ethel Shufelt, 87, passed into eternal life on July 3, 2010. She died peacefully after a long illness with her loving family at her side. Born in Knox on December 23, 1922, Velma was the daughter of the late Walter and Doris Schoonmaker Wood.
With her late husband Merle, Velma owned and operated the Highland Farms Family Restaurant in Altamont for many years. Afterward, she was employed as Office Manager for Bob Howard Inc, Realtor. At the time of death, Velma resided at Avila, an independent retirement community.
She was the loving mother of Philip (Joyce) Gibbs of Guilderland, Roger (Joanne) Gibbs of Brant Lake, Dennis (Donna) Gibbs of Delanson, Donna (Scott) Raplee of Johnson City and the late Kathy Gibbs. She is the sister of the late Thelma Esther Wood. Velma is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at St. Peter's Hospital and Hospice Inn for their kind compassionate care of Velma.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday morning at 10:00 at St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland. Interment will follow at Knox Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd. Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Velma E. Shufelt.
