SCOTIA – Velma Rice De Guerre, 98, of Scotia, passed away on Sunday July 4, 2010 at her residence, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Schenectady and was the daughter of the late Stephen L. and Mabel Male Rice. Velma had worked for the General Electric Company several years ago and at the Carl Company in Schenectady. She was a member of the Gold and Silver Club and a volunteer with the Cancer Crusade and the American Heart Association. Velma enjoyed gardening, baking, soap operas, senior trips and helping students with their school work. Known as "the Mayor of Orlinda Ave", she was a devoted mother, neighbor and friend. Velma requested that her epitaph would read "She's finally minding her own business". Her favorite line of poetry is "So, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, when just the art of being kind is all this sad world needs".
She was predeceased in 1981 by her beloved husband of 52 years, William Rona De Guerre and her nephew, John. Velma is the devoted mother of William DeGuerre and his wife Patty of Scotia, Denise Brownell of Brighton, Colorado and the late Ronayne De Guerre. She is the sister of George (Wanda) Rice and the late Stephen Rice. Velma is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 5 nieces.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial services on Friday at 11:00 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Memorial contributions may be made to Eddy Senior Care-PACE, 504 State Street. Schenectady, NY 12305 in memory of Velma R. DeGuerre.
