GUILDERLAND- Very Rev. Thomas P. Mundukuzhy, Cor-Episcopa, entered into eternal rest on Friday March 30, 2007 in Albany, NY. He was born in Kerala, India and was the son of the late Philipose and Annamma Varghis Mathai.
He was a 1959 graduate of the Orthodox Theological Seminary and earned his Masters degree in 1969 at Syracuse University. After seminary, he was appointed as personal secretary to His Grace Mathews Mar Athananasius Metropolitan and later as Secretary of the Diocese outside Kerala including the current dioceses of Calcutta, Bombay, Delhi, Madras, America, Canada and United Kingdom.
He was ordained as deacon in 1955 at Catholicate Palace, Devalokam by His Holiness Baslius Geervarghese II; as full deacon in 1966 at Paliakara Church, Thiruvalla; as Priest in 1966 at Mundukuzhy St. Kuriakose Church and elevated to Cor Episocoa, the highest ecclesiastical position in the church for a married Priest, in 1981 by His Grace Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus and His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios. He was Sunday School Director of the American Diocese from 1980-2003. He served as vicar of many churches including St. Gregorios in Toronto, St. George's in Kingston Ont., St. Mary's in Brooklyn, St. Paul's in Albany and St. Thomas in Syracuse. He was the editor of Malankara Light, the diocesan magazine. Rev. Mundukuzhy was the author of several church books and publications.
He is survived by his wife, Achamma Kuruvilla Thomas; his sons, Vinu M. Thomas, Anil K. (Bindu) Thomas and Mohan P. Thomas; his daughter, Anne (Robin) Mathew; his grandsons, Andrew Thomas & Aaron Mathew. He is the brother of Philipose, Philip, Alexander, Mathew, John, Mariamma, Sosamma and the late Varghis. Several uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces also survive.
Funeral services will be Monday morning at 10:00 St . Peter Armenian Apostolic Church, 100 Troy-Schenectady Rd. Watervliet. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 8 pm at NewComer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery.
