Virginia Szumlas

Schenectady- Virginia T. Szumlas, 90, passed away at the Glendale Nursing Home after complications from a stroke. Born and raised in Schenectady she was the daughter of the late Peter and Anna Szumlas. Divorced from Phillip Hussong in 1945, Virginia raised her son as a single parent by working hard to provide for him in a difficult era. She worked as a waitress in Schenectady at the Vendome, Roth's, Hogan's City Squire, the Porterhouse Too, Verrutto's, and also Veeder's Restaurant in Colonie. In her seventies and early eighties Virginia participated in the Schenectady County Foster Grandparents Program at Christ Church Daycare, the YWCA and Refreshing Springs. She is predeceased by her sister Paula Cloos.
Virginia is survived by her beloved son Christopher (Mary) Hussong of Colonie, her cherished granddaughter Susan Tessier of Jericho, VT and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by her two sisters, Stella Meister of Guilderland and Jayne Lillis formerly of Colonie and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Virginia's life will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 PM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Interment will be in Memory's Garden. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Glendale Nursing Home, 59 Hetcheltown Rd., Scotia, NY 12302 in memory of Virginia T. Szumlas.
