Albany, NY – Walter F. Gries, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully Sunday December 6, 2009 at his home.
Walter was born in Calgary, Canada the son of the late Walter F. and Helene Gries, Sr. He and his family moved to Saratoga Springs when Walter was young and he was raised and educated there. Saratoga always held a special place in his heart and every August you could always find Walter and Jean at the flat track. As a young man he was a golf caddy in Saratoga and had even caddied for Lucky Luciano and Bing Crosby. He proudly served in the US Army during WW II, where he spent his time between being train brakeman in India and playing baseball for the Army. After the service Walter worked as a brakeman and conductor for Amtrak, retiring in 1983. He was predeceased by his companion Eugenia Dugan.
He is survived by his son Thomas (Barbara) Gries, Sr., grandsons: Thomas (Michelle) Gries, Jr. and Scott (Alice) Gries, Eugenia's daughters: Cathy (James) Nasser and Patty (Chuck) Eysaman and Eugenia's grandchildren: Jason (Erica), Megan and John, several nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Stratton VA Medical Center Home Based Primary Care Team and his aid Linda from Visiting Nurse Home Care for their care and compassion shown to Walter.
