Watervliet - Walter Peter Hyra, Sr,, 71, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 with his loving family by his side. Walter was the son of the late Stephen and Christina (Lyzak) Hyra.
Walter was born in Poland and came to America in 1964. Walter was the proud owner of four diners, Walt's Luncheonette, Stage Coach Diner, Yanni's Deli and most recently, Rte. 50 Diner, Ballston Spa. Walter was known for his big heart. He donated dinners every week to the Veteran's House in Ballston Spa. If anyone was down on their luck, he fed them and donated money to help them. He never turned a hungry person away.
Walt's motto was "Live With Passion."
Walter is survived by his wife, Cathy; his sons, Walter (Spring) Hyra, Jr., Brian (Lisa) Hyra; his grandchildren, Payton, Devin and Sydney Hyra; his brother, Andrew (Ginny) Hyra, Sr., and brother-in-law, Rick (Kelly) Thomas; his nieces and nephews, Andrea (Paul) Aubin, Tanya Hyra, Andrew (Caitlin) Hyra, Jr., Alexander (Shannon) Hyra, Peggy, Russ (Colleen), Tyler and Gabby Thomas; the staff of Rte. 50 Diner; the hundreds of loyal patrons and many loving relatives.
The family requests that masks be worn both at the funeral home and church.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd., Watervliet, on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Parastas will be held at the funeral home at 5:00 pm. A Mass will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, 2410 4th Ave, Watervliet, NY 12189. Interment will follow the service at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cemetery, 88 Elm St., Watervliet.
