WALTER A. LECLAIR, age 87 of Altamont, NY passed away on Monday, May 22, 2017.
Born on November 23, 1929 in Jay, N.Y., he was the son of the late George and Mary
LeClair.
Walt served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked as a Maintenance
Supervisor at SUNY Albany for many years before retiring. Walt had a talent and passion
for woodcarving birds of many types. He was so proud of displaying his carvings and
they were admired by many. He truly enjoyed the time he spent with his weekly carving
group, and was always willing to encourage new carvers. Over the last several years Walt
played a large role in coordinating his yearly family reunions; he always treasured and
looked forward to spending time with his family and friends.
Walt is survived by his loving wife Mary (Cunningham) of 65 years, his four sons, Scott
(Marlene), Philip (Dawn), Steve (Claudia), and Jamey (Karen) as well as his two sisters,
Lola Holt and Rita Bastian (Jack) along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ralph LeClair and his sister
Augusta Adams.
Walt's family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at the Hospice Inn at St.
Peters Hospital for their loving care and support during his time there. The family would
also like to thank the Altamont Rescue Squad, and the Eddy Visiting Nurses, who spent
time caring for Walt as well.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family at St. John's Lutheran Church, 142
Maple Avenue in Altamont on Saturday, June 3rd from 2 to 3 p.m. with a service and
reception immediately following.
