COLONIE- Walter R. Miers, 91, of Colonie, passed away at his home in Colonie on Thursday August 11, 2005 after a brief illness.
Walt was born on Schoharie Hill in Schoharie, NY and was the son of the late George and Margaret Nethaway Miers. He graduated from Schoharie Central High School in 1932 and Albany Business College in 1935. Walt worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company for 40 years, retiring in 1976 as the Assistant Manager of the Albany Parts Depot.
He was an avid outdoorsman for all of his life spending his leisure time fishing, hunting and camping. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and metal finding. Walt was a member of the Watervliet Fish and Game Club for many years and served as an instructor for their NRA sponsored hunter safety program for 17 years. He spent many summers at his camp at Woodstock Lake where he enjoyed fishing, camping and chatting with his neighbors. Walt became an artist while in his seventies and painted many pictures for the enjoyment of his family. At age 87, he authored "Upper Schoharie Hill (New York) 1914-1936" which has been read and appreciated by many people.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Boyle Miers and his three children, Charlotte (John) Grossbeck of Howes Cave, NY, Bruce (Barbara) Miers of Metamora, IL and Marilyn (Robert) Paluszak of Albany. He is the grandfather of Jeffrey Miers of Chandler, AZ, Kelly Savage of Minneapolis, MN, Eric Grossbeck of Long Beach, CA. and Kevin (Shannon) Grossbeck of Troutman, NC. Great grandfather of Kevin (KJ) Grossbeck Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Wednesday from 12 noon to 2:00 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt 155-south of Central Ave). Memorial services will be celebrated at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and at the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made to Schoharie County Historical Society, 145 Fort Rd. Schoharie, NY 12157 in memory of Walter R. Miers.
