ALBANY-Walter P. Muniak, 86 passed away peacefully on March 19, 2014 after a long illness. Born in Przeclaw, Poland, and at the age of five immigrated to the United States passing through Ellis Island to begin a new life in New York City with his parents. Son of the late Theodore and Angela (Typer) Muniak, and maternal mother Helena Miler.
Walter was proud to have served his country and was a Navy Veteran and had served with the Sea B's in Okinawa, Japan during WW II. He was a loyal worker for 33 years to the US Postal Service and retired in 1984 to the Jersey shore where he enjoyed golf and the beach with his family for 13 years. After his illness he returned back to the Capital District. Walter had been an active member of the VFW Post #8692 and the North Albany American Legion Post for many years. In addition Walter was an avid and loyal Phillies and NY Giant fan. He pursued his passion for golf up to his illness.
In his early years Walter's passion was softball which he enjoyed playing on a travel team which took him to Canada. There he met and fell in love with the love of his life Marcelle (Lafortune) to whom he was married to for 57 years up to his passing.
A devoted and loving father to his surviving children, Carolyn A. Micheli (Phil Bayly fiancée)of Clifton Park, NY Steven P. Muniak of Louisiana, Michele Mutschler (Jim) of Hopkinton, MA, Christine O'Connell (Tom) East Greenbush, NY. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son-in-law, Elio Micheli Jr. Best known to his grandkids as Wawa, he loved them all and championed their many successes; Dean Micheli, Jason Mutschler, Rachel Mutschler, Emily Mutschler, Cassandra Muniak and Kaelyn O'Connell. He is also survived by his dear brothers Teddy Muniak and Richard Muniak and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 2-5 PM on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 2:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 24, 2014 at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumpter Ave. Guilderland.
Interment will be at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
