COLONIE – Walter P. Guenther, 92, of Colonie, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday February 7, 2011.
He was born in Berlin, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1953. He earned his Ph.D. in German and French at the University of Albany. Mr. Guenther taught French and German at Albany Academy and Albany High School for many years, retiring in 1981.
Walter was a commander in the German Army and served in Russia during World War II. Wounded three times, he was a prisoner of war in Brittany, France. He was later reunited with his brother Rudolph, and then met his future wife Jeanne at the International Center in Albany. In recent years, Walter has become a cherished lecturer and advisor to the US. Military Academy at West Point. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Jeanne Guenther. He is the father of Paul Guenther and Stepfather of Hugh (Diane) O'Connor of Silver Spring, MD.
Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10:00 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 510 Albany-Shaker Rd. Loudonville, NY 12211 in memory of Walter P. Guenther.
