COLONIE - Walter R. Sweet Jr., 95, a resident of Colonie since 1954, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Evergreen Commons Nursing Home in East Greenbush.
Born in Albany in 1918, Walter was the son of the late Walter and Emma (Gardner) Sweet and predeceased by his sisters, Elvada Enos and Verna Dubuc. Walter was employed by General Electric, holding positions from stock room foreman to Production Control Specialist at the time of his retirement in 1979, after 38 years of service. Growing up, Walter played baseball for the Suburban Twilight League in Albany mostly as a first baseman. He had been a member of the Albany Mason Temple for a time, enjoyed golf, and was an avid reader. He was also a 58 year member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Colonie.
Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, Geraldine (Hooley) Sweet.
Walter is the loving father of Donald R. (Ollie) Sweet of Argyle, NY and Ellen J. (Richard) Britain of Rensselaer, NY. He was the devoted grandfather of Christopher (Stacy) Sweet of Concord, NC, Gregory (Meghan) Sweet of So. Burlington, VT, Jason Sweet of Cornelius, NC, Amy (Chris) Wheland of Troy, NY, and the late Susan Britain. Walter was also great grandfather of Samantha (Gabe), Donovan (Jennifer) and Cassandra Sweet, McKenna, Ryan and Braden Sweet and Emily and Leah Wheland. He was also great-great grandfather of Jacob Sweet and Carson Sweet.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Monday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A calling hour will precede the service on Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memory Gardens in Colonie.
