NISKAYUNA - Walter "Walt" Sherwood Wilmot, 89, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Ellis Hospital with his loving wife of 31 years, Dorothea Pessolano Wilmot, by his side. Born in Bridgeport, CT on September 7, 1923, he was the son of the late Walter Sherwood Wilmot and Lora Alice Tousey. After graduating in 1941 from Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, CT, he attended Williams College (1947), Cambridge University in England and Harvard Graduate School (1951). He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the Medical Corps 68th General Hospital, serving in England and France until 1946. Upon return to the United States he was employed as a political science professor at Williams College then transitioned into the corporate world becoming an investment analyst for Connecticut Bank and Trust. From 1957 – 1985 he worked in the Labor Relations department for AVCO Corp and eventually became the Vice President of Labor Relations for Textron, Inc., until his retirement in 1991. For the duration of his life he continued to learn and expand his knowledge through his voracious love of reading all things non-fiction and never going a day without a copy of The New York Times.
Predeceased by son, Roderick S Wilmot, step-son, Timothy Lange, and brother, Frederick T Wilmot, Walt is survived by his wife, Dorothea P Wilmot, of Niskayuna; daughters, Sandra Bryant (Paul) of Louisiana and Lynn Vitalone (Dick) of New Jersey; three step-sons, Gary J Kimball (Maureen) of Niskayuna, Greg Kimball of Florida and William Lange of Savannah, GA. He is the grandfather of Shawn, Shannon, Derek, Matthew, Karim, Jill and Steven; the great-grandfather of Tyler, Ashton, Maya, Owen, Braxton, Bryn, Quinn, Reagan and Taylor; and dear to many other family members and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A calling hour will precede the service from 1 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
